Knit Happens Classes
HELEN CHATTERTON of Helen Chatterton Textiles moved from Liverpool to Edinburgh in May 2022 and based her business Helen Chatterton Textiles at Summerhall, Edinburgh. As well as running her textiles business making Scarves, Helen has always been a passionate knitter.
When she first moved the business into Summerhall she had a tiny studio in the roof of the main part of the building but quickly realised a larger studio was needed. On seeing the studio space on offer, complete with a selection of chairs and tables her first thought was what a great space to teach workshops. Knit Happens Classes was born. Circumstances at Summerhall made Helen look around for another workshop, so she set up her textiles business at her home in a purpose made studio.
The space isn't set up for workshops so Helen is looking round for other spaces to run her classes.
She has taught knitting for many years and was the main knitting workshop tutor at Fibre and Clay in Knutsford. Helen also taught at Liverpool Community College and led a First World War project based sock knitting workshop for Liverpool Museums and Galleries .
In January/February 2013 Helen undertook an Artists’s Residency with the Bluecoat Display Centre, Liverpool, at Holly Lodge Girls School, teaching about 200 girls to knit and to complete an installation for an art project. In October 2015 she did a similar residency with young women on probation and taught them to knit, also through BDC.In March 2019 Helen completed further residencies in Liverpool funded by the Bluecoat Display Centre, in a local community outreach hospital and a secure mental health unit.
Helen taught Fair Isle techniques at Woolly Good Edinburgh's initial show in April 2024 and is delighted to be teaching the same workshop in April this year.
